When managing your business's energy supply, understanding the different measurements and numbers on the MPAN is crucial.

A Meter Point Administration Number (MPAN) is a unique reference for your electricity supply. Whether you are analysing your electricity bill, switching energy suppliers, or verifying your electricity supply, knowing all about your MPAN can simplify the process.

Understanding MPAN and MPRN Numbers

MPAN stands for Meter Point Administration Number, also known as the supply number. This 21-digit number helps electricity suppliers and distribution network operators (DNOs) identify your meter and your location. Your meter serial number differs from the MPAN, and you can find it physically printed on your meter.

While MPANs relate to electricity, MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number) is the equivalent for gas supply. The MPRN is a unique identifier for your gas meter and can be found on your gas bill. MPAN and MPRN numbers are vital when you need to find your supplier or resolve billing issues.

Your MPAN and MPRN numbers will always remain the same no matter what supplier you sign with. The only way this will change is if you get a new meter or move property.

Where to Find Your MPAN Number

Your MPAN can be found on your electricity bill under the section labelled "Supply Number." Unlike the meter serial number, which is printed on your meter, the MPAN is not found on the meter itself. If you need to check your MPAN, refer to your bill or contact your energy supplier.

Breakdown of an MPAN

Your MPAN will be set out in the below format:

Profile class

This number defines the type of usage. In the example above, this is labelled "00". This tells the supplier whether you have a domestic or commercial supply. This also is an indicator of the usage of electricity from your property. For example, the profile class "00" is only given to customers that use over 100 kW and therefore have a half-hourly meter.

Meter Time Switch Code (MTC)

This indicates how your meter is configured. In the above image, these are the numbers "222." This refers to whether your meter has a single rate or time of usage rate. For example, 24-hour businesses that use electricity all day and night would therefore benefit from having a day and a night rate for electricity.

Line loss factor (LLF)

The next three numbers, "444," show the line loss factor. This is to show how much electricity is lost as it is supplied to your meter. The fee for lost electricity is charged to your supplier by the distribution network to cover the cost of using the network and cables in your area.

Distribution ID

The bottom left two digits show as "15" on the image above; identify the distribution company responsible for your electricity supply. If you are ever trying to find out what distribution network you are with, you will need this number.

Meter point ID

This 8-digit number is a unique reference for your meter. This will be unique to your distribution area and allow your supplier or the DNO to locate your meter if needed.

Check digit

The last three numbers, shown as "225" above, are verification numbers ensuring accuracy.

Why do these matter for businesses?

For businesses, MPANs play a crucial role in:

Switching energy suppliers

When switching to a new energy supplier, you will need to give them your MPAN so they know exactly where to send the electricity. From this, your new supplier can gain vital information such as consumption levels.

Identifying the meter

If you ever have a problem with your electricity supply, you might need your MPAN so your supplier can identify the issue and get it fixed.

Resolving billing discrepancies.

If you feel like you are overpaying for your electricity, making a complaint about this could be easier if you have your MPAN number ready when you contact your supplier. This will help them identify and solve the issue more efficiently.

How to Use MPANs When Switching Energy Suppliers

If you plan to switch energy suppliers, your new supplier will request your MPAN to set up your new contract. Providing accurate information ensures a smooth transition without disruptions in your electricity supply.

Need Help with Your MPAN?

If you cannot locate your MPAN, your distribution network operators can provide it. Alternatively, you can check your electricity bill or use an online point ID lookup tool.

MPANs are essential for managing your business energy effectively. Whether dealing with an electricity bill, verifying a meter point reference number (MPRN), or analysing meter time switch code details, knowing your MPAN simplifies the process.
